The authentic hadith
Several companions narrated the Prophet's ﷺ words about dreams of him. In Sahih al-Bukhari, Abu Hurairah reports: "Whoever sees me in a dream will see me in wakefulness, and Shaytan cannot imitate me." Another narration says: "Whoever sees me has seen the truth." On the basis of these hadith, scholars agree that Shaytan cannot appear in the Prophet's ﷺ true form.
How scholars understood "in his form"
Al-Bukhari records that Muhammad ibn Sirin would add: "That is, if he sees him in his own form." Many scholars therefore held that the dream is a true vision of the Prophet ﷺ when he appears as he is described in the authentic reports of his appearance (the shama'il). If a dreamer sees a figure claiming to be the Prophet ﷺ that clearly does not match that description, scholars generally advise caution in concluding who it was.
Some scholars held a broader view, that any vision the dreamer is certain was the Prophet ﷺ is from him, with differences in his appearance reflecting the dreamer's own state of faith. Both views treat the dream with great respect.
What such a dream may signify
- Glad tidings — encouragement, a sign of love for the Prophet ﷺ, and a reminder to follow his Sunnah.
- Seeing him smiling or pleased — commonly read as a good state of the dreamer's faith and practice.
- Receiving something from him — often read as receiving knowledge, guidance or blessing.
- Seeing him displeased or turning away — read as a gentle warning to examine one's conduct and return to the Sunnah.
- Praying behind him — commonly read as following his way.
What the dream does not mean
Scholars are unanimous that dreams, even true dreams of the Prophet ﷺ, cannot establish a new ruling, change an existing one, or override the Quran and the authentic Sunnah. If someone reports that the Prophet ﷺ instructed something in a dream that contradicts clear religious teaching, the instruction is not followed, and the error is attributed to the dreamer's memory or understanding. A dream is a personal blessing, not a claim to authority over others.
Etiquette after the dream
Praise Allah, send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and let the dream increase you in following his example. Share it, if at all, only with people you trust, and avoid using it to seek status or to make claims about yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shaytan appear as the Prophet ﷺ in a dream?
No. The authentic hadith states that Shaytan cannot take his form.
How do I know it was really him?
Many scholars say the dream is true when he appears in his known description. If you are unsure, treat the dream as encouragement and speak to a knowledgeable person.
Does seeing the Prophet ﷺ mean I am a righteous person?
It is a blessing and a good sign, but scholars warn against pride. Righteousness is shown through faith and deeds, not dreams.
